The coffee shop is bustling around me, but I pay no attention to the countless people that are drifting past my table. I am vaguely aware of a few people giving me a second glance, but my gaze is firmly fixed on the entrance, and my narrowed eyes and tensed mouth make it clear that I am in no mood to meet fans right now.
An unfamiliar pop song is playing over the cafe speakers, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee mixes with the slightly salty ocean breeze that is blowing through the open windows. The shop looks like it belongs on the beach with turquoise walls, white curtains, ocean paintings, and seashells decorating the tables. However, despite the adorable decorations, I have only been here once and was not inclined to return because of how popular it is. But when it comes to decisions relating to Matt and I's fake dating arrangement, my manager gets final say, and she chose this coffee shop for my meeting with Jade.
I am still glaring at the door, dread filling my entire body at the thought of having to participate in any kind of conversation with Jade, when something that feels like a crumpled up straw wrapper hits me in the back of the head.
My glare shifts to a confused frown as I spin around in my chair to search for the culprit, and I immediately catch sight of two figures slumped down in a booth with menus covering their faces. Even though I can't see their upper bodies, it doesn't take a genius to recognize the two sets of legs underneath their table. The one closer to the wall has long legs and is dressed in baggy blue jeans that I helped him bedazzle. Beside him sits a girl wearing a skirt, and even if I didn't notice the giant cut on her knee that I know she got shaving, the bright pink sneakers on her feet are unmissable, and also one of a kind. I would know, since I had them custom made for her.
"What the fuck, you guys?" I hiss quietly, glancing around to make sure no one is paying attention before leaning closer to the booth next to my table. "Put the menus down, you look stupid."
Sydney and Larray slowly lower their menus and smile at me sheepishly. "You look really pretty today, Lo." Sydney says sweetly as she innocently tucks her hair behind her ears.
"Why are you here?" I growl, scowling at each of them in turn. "I told you not to come."
"You need backup in case she causes a scene." Larray puffs out his chest and pulls down the sunglasses sitting on top of his head to cover his eyes. "We're your bodyguards. I'll be like, 'Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.'"
I open my mouth to argue, but Sydney is quick to cut me off, her voice soft and sincere amongst the loud chatter and laughter that fills the cafe. "Babe, we're not leaving. We know how difficult Jade can be, and we're just here for moral support, okay? We won't say a word."
