Naina stood frozen in shock while Rivaan carefully held her mother, who had fainted in his arms. Just as he was about to ask Naina for help, Anamay walked in, his eyes widening as he took in the scene: his brother holding an unconscious older woman, and Naina, pregnant and standing in their apartment.

Without wasting time, Anamay stepped forward. “What’s going on here?” he asked, but neither Rivaan nor Naina responded. Instead, he moved to assist Rivaan in carrying Naina’s mother inside and gently laying her on the bed.

“Ma, wake up! Please!” Naina pleaded, sitting beside her mother, anxiety etched across her face.

Anamay brought a glass of water and sprinkled some on her mother’s face. Slowly, she stirred, her eyes fluttering open. Disoriented, she looked around before her gaze settled on Naina.

“When did you get married?” her mother asked, her voice weak but laced with confusion.

Anamay’s eyes widened, and he turned to Rivaan. “You both got married without telling anyone? Without telling me?”

Rivaan opened his mouth to explain, but before he could say anything, Naina blurted out, “About four months ago. And now I’m pregnant.”

Rivaan stared at her, utterly shocked by her sudden lie, but he held his tongue. Anamay, equally stunned, glanced between them before silently excusing himself to the living room, giving them some space.

Naina’s mother began a barrage of questions: What’s his name? What’s his caste? What does he do? Who was the man standing next to him? Naina answered each question calmly, while Rivaan stood silently nearby, watching the interaction.

Suddenly, her mother’s most Bihari query came: “Does he have a sarkari naukri (government job)?”

Rivaan’s eyes widened in disbelief. A billionaire, and she’s worried about a government job? He looked at Naina’s mother, trying to comprehend the absurdity of it, but Naina’s quiet chuckle broke the tension. She understood her mother’s mindset, and for a moment, even Rivaan found himself smiling.

Realizing they needed privacy, Rivaan quietly left the room, leaving mother and daughter alone.

Her mother sighed deeply. “We didn’t support you, and you ran away for this job. But you should’ve told us about your marriage. If you weren’t pregnant, I would have shown you what would happen,” she scolded lightly, her voice both stern and tender. “I don’t know how I’ll tell your father about this, but... let it be. I planned to stay for a month or two, but seeing you like this, I’ll stay until the baby is born. Now go, I need to rest.”

Naina nodded, tears of relief pricking her eyes. She kissed her mother’s forehead and quietly left the room.

In the living room, both brothers were sitting, waiting for her explanation. Rivaan looked at her with a mix of curiosity and frustration. “Why did you tell her we’re married?”

Naina took a deep breath, knowing she owed him an explanation. “My family is very traditional, Rivaan. They’d have a hard time accepting the situation as it is. I lied to my mom because I didn’t want her to stress or... worse.”

“But at some point, you’ll have to tell her the truth,” Rivaan insisted, his voice firm.

“I will, but not now. She fainted just from seeing me pregnant and living with you. If she finds out I’m not married, God knows what will happen. Trust me, I’ll tell her the truth. Just not right now.”

Rivaan stared at her, processing her words. Finally, he nodded. “Okay. But you can’t avoid this forever.”

“I know,” Naina murmured, grateful for his understanding.

Anamay, who had been quietly observing, cleared his throat loudly. “So, can anyone explain what’s going on here?”

Naina and Rivaan exchanged glances. This was going to be a long conversation.
