Chapter Five: Home

After some pondering in the moonlight I stand from the grassy clearing, lightning bugs and crickets surrounding my resting place. I have been trying to connect with the Mood Goddess when I have my nightmares, but so far it has been futile. I begin hiking back down the trail towards the house, deep in thought about my dreams and their possible implications. As I walk the cool wind brushes my hair into my face and I reach up to brush it out of my face.

Suddenly the snap of a twig to my right steals my attention and as I quickly turn to find its source I find my gaze met with empty woods. I begin walking towards the sound, wondering if a rogue had made its way into the territory. I could use some fighting to expel my growing anger and frustration. Another snap sounds further ahead of me, near a large pine tree, and as I quickly jog over to the tree I notice something out of the corner of my eye. Racing further with curiosity and the desire to release some anger, I come across a clearing in the trees.

Standing at about ten feet tall a stone staircase draws my attention and I stare ahead as if doing so would make the anomaly disappear. Something inside me urges me forward, almost like a low hum in my mind directing me to the foot of the staircase. I begin taking slow steps up the stairs, the dark forest eerily silent in the most unnatural way. The more steps I take the more blurry and distorted the world around me becomes, and suddenly I find myself at the very top of the stair case. Looking around myself as the humming in my mind grows louder I take the final step through what suddenly appeared to be a doorway lingering at the top of the stairs.

I step through this doorway and as the forest disappears behind me my vision is clouded in darkness.

***********************************************************

I awake to the sound of birds chirping and squirrels rustling in the trees, and as I open my eyes I grunt at the bright, warm sunlight peering down at me through gaps between leaves. I look around the forest to gather my surroundings and realized I must have fallen asleep after my run last night. I curse and quickly stand, brushing leaves and dirt off my clothes, before beginning my journey back home. After a short walk I feel myself approaching the pack boundary line, and prepare myself for the sensation of being rejoined with my pack links.

"Who are you? What are doing in Crescent Moon territory?" Shouts a male voice.

I freeze in my steps and raise my hands as I chuckle, "so funny guys; it's me."

"Identify yourself rogue."

I gulp a little, "whoever you are, this isn't funny. I am your Luna and I will enter my territory."

A man steps closer to me, a knife in his hand, "you are not my Luna. Drop to your knees and come with me or I will slice your throat right now."

My eyes widen in shock; I have never seen this man in my life, "excuse me? I am Katherine Bellcourt, Luna of the Crescent Moon pack."

"Annabel Winters is the Luna of this pack and she's been missing for quite some time. Now SIT DOWN on your knees and allow me to approach. I have no problem killing you, rogue." The man's voice echoed around me and I quickly, and numbly fall to my knees in the grass.

The man gives me a once over and confusion builds between his brows as he considers my plea, "who are you?"

"Like I said, I am Katherine Bellcourt and I am the Luna of the Crescent Moon pack. Michael Raider is the pack alpha; our pack lives on this land" I say, confusion and fear lacing my words as I assess the man in front of me.

He must be over six feet tall, and his dark grey t-shirt laid stark against his tan skin and tightly clung to his muscles. He seems fit and likely would be a challenging wolf to fight if needed. Who is he? Why would someone be pretending to be a member of my pack when I am the Luna, who knows all her pack members by name. If he tries anything I have no problem fighting this wolf with my full fury. As he peers down at me I can tell he is mind-linking someone, further adding to my confusion. Suddenly a few more men appear out of the forest, and I begin to prepare myself for a difficult fight.
