'Slap, Flirt, Repeat'

Miyoung wasn't your typical student at Seoul National University. She was a vibe. You know that one person who's always at the center of every awkward situation, but somehow makes it look like a comedy show? Yeah, that was Miyoung. She was the kind of person who wore mismatched socks by choice, told puns at the most inappropriate times, and accidentally set off the fire alarm in the library—twice—all in the name of "living her truth."

Miyoung was also a master's student, which was absolutely hilarious because she had absolutely zero idea what she was doing with her life. Her degree? In "Philosophy and How To Get By on Caffeine Alone." Seriously, what was she supposed to do with a philosophy degree? Open a coffee shop? Oh wait... her parents did that.

Her parents, the Ahns, were a walking, talking sitcom. They ran a small café in the heart of Seoul, Brewed Awakenings, but it wasn't just a café. It was an experience—and by experience, she meant an emotional rollercoaster.

Her mom, Mrs. Ahn, was the Korean version of a failed K-pop trainee. She had more dreams than the average K-drama protagonist but ended up selling overpriced, organic, gluten-free, "soul-enlightening" coffee. It was so pretentious that even the barista at the next café rolled their eyes every time someone ordered. But Mrs. Lee was living her best life, calling herself a "coffee artist," and often making Miyoung's life a living hell by constantly trying to matchmake her with any guy who walked into the café. Miyoung once came home to find her mom on a Zoom call with a guy in the US, trying to sell him "virtual coffee dates."

Miyoung's dad, Mr. Ahn, was... well, he was different. He once mistook a Starbucks cup for a hotdog and insisted on having a "deep, meaningful conversation" with it. He was an eternal optimist, in the way that people who believe in horoscopes are optimists. He met Mrs. Lee at a café in Vienna after she spilled coffee on his shirt. He claimed it was "love at first espresso shot." Now, they were partners in both coffee and life, constantly breaking into random musicals while serving lattes to confused customers. He once serenaded a grandma with "I Will Survive" because he felt the song. Miyoung was scarred for life.

So yeah, this was the environment that made Miyoung into... well, Miyoung.

On this particular day, she was minding her own business, scrolling through memes as she waited for her train. She was in the middle of laughing at a cat who looked like it had just seen a ghost, when she heard the unmistakable sound of someone getting slapped. Like, really slapped.

Her head snapped up.

She saw him—the mysterious man from the park. The Salesman.

And, well... let's just say he wasn't slapping anyone in the normal sense of the word. He was in a standoff with another person in the middle of the train station, the two of them playing some version of ddakji. But it wasn't the flipping part that was getting all the attention. Oh no. Every time the other guy lost, the Salesman slapped him across the face, and it looked... well, a little too satisfying.
