Amara had noticed it before, but today, it was impossible to ignore—Zephyr's wolf, Kael, was growing more possessive by the day.
She was merely standing in the training grounds, watching as some of the younger warriors sparred, when it happened again. One of the pack warriors, a tall and broad young man named Orin, had approached her, offering a polite smile. "Luna, do you need an escort back to the packhouse?"
Before she could even answer, a deep growl reverberated through the air.
Amara turned, knowing what she would see. Zephyr's silver eyes had turned completely black—Kael was at the surface, his wolf pushing forward with barely restrained aggression. His entire frame was taut, muscles coiled as if ready to strike.
Orin immediately took a step back, lowering his head in submission. "Apologies, Alpha. I meant no disrespect."
Zephyr didn't speak. Instead, Kael's voice rumbled through their shared mind. He gets too close. They all do. She is ours.
Amara exhaled softly, stepping toward Zephyr and placing a hand on his chest. "Kael," she murmured, feeling the tension thrumming beneath her fingertips. "Calm down. He was only being polite."
Kael's black eyes flicked toward her, and for a moment, she wasn't sure if he would back down. The possessiveness in his gaze was raw, untamed, as if his wolfish instincts were demanding that he mark her right here and now for all to see.
They should know, Kael growled within Zephyr's mind. She belongs to us.
"She does," Zephyr agreed, speaking to his wolf. "But she is not a prisoner."
Amara felt the shift as Zephyr fought for control, his eyes flickering from black to silver. Finally, he took a slow breath, reigning Kael back. He was still tense, but his grip on her wrist softened.
"I don't like it," Zephyr admitted aloud, his voice gruff. "Other males getting near you."
Amara arched a brow. "You don't like it, or Kael doesn't like it?"
Zephyr hesitated before sighing. "Both."
She reached up, cupping his jaw. "You need to trust me. I'm yours, Zephyr. No one can change that."
A deep, pleased rumble echoed in his chest—Kael's approval.
Zephyr exhaled, pressing his forehead against hers. "I know." His hands slid down her waist, pulling her closer. "But Kael will never stop growling when someone gets too close. It's instinct."
Amara smiled, resting her hands against his chest. "Then I suppose I'll just have to keep reminding him."
Zephyr huffed a small laugh, but there was no mistaking the way his grip tightened, as if he would never let her go.
