The gun fell from her grasp and slithered to the side of the room, out of her reach. I slapped her hard across the face, the force sending her stumbling to the floor in shock. She raised her head and wiped the blood from the corner of her lips. “Bitch!” she spat, fury emanating from her eyes as she looked at me.“Look into the mirror and you’ll see who the real bitch is between us,” I replied through gritted teeth. I had been terrified for my life a moment ago, but seeing the arrogant smirk on her face made me lose control. No one cheap like Natalia would bring me down. She wanted me to die, but I swore to drag her to hell with me before she could kill me.
“Why couldn’t you leave me in peace, Natalia? You have everything you want in life. Why kill me when it won’t change a thing?”
“It will change a thing!” Natalia screamed in rage, turning her fingers into a ball at her side. “Once you’re gone, everything I’ve ever wanted will be mine,” she added. Slowly, she pulled herself together and got to her feet.
Until now, I still couldn’t understand her. She made it sound as though I was taking everything from her when, in fact, she had stolen my husband right under my nose. Undoubtedly, she had a few loose screws. To put it simply, she was psychotic and delusional. And she was bent on killing me tonight.
“I hated you from the moment I laid my eyes on you, Lily. I loathed you with a deep, burning passion. And what do I do to people I don’t like?”
“You kill them,” I replied, looking her straight in the eye.
“I erase them from my path,” she grinned evilly.
“That’s putting it mildly. You’re a killer, Natalia. You deserve to be in prison for your sins.”
“No one will know about my crimes. I’ll never be imprisoned. You’re going to end up like one of my victims tonight.” Natalia moved closer. As she did so, she wore an eerily wide smile like a lunatic.
Indeed, she was out of her mind!
Natalia lunged at me, but I quickly dodged her, and she hit the wall, falling to her knees. I jumped in the direction of the gun and picked it up in my trembling hands.
“Don’t move or I will shoot you,” I warned, aiming the gun in her direction. Instead of fear, amusement lit her eyes. She got to her knees without tearing her gaze off me. “Can you really shoot?” she laughed hysterically until tears came from her eyes. “You’re the type who couldn’t even kill a fly, and I doubt you could kill me with that weapon.”
I swallowed hard as she made her way toward me with a smile on her lips. I took a retreating step backward to put distance between us. But Natalia kept moving closer, and my back finally hit the wall.
Dead end.
I had never fired a gun before. Even worse, I had never expected myself to be aiming it at another woman. If I shot Natalia now, I would end up killing her. Whether she ended up dead or alive, I would still go to prison. It would come out as a crime of passion once the truth that I was Grey’s wife came out. Everyone would assume that I killed my husband’s mistress after discovering their affair.
“Fire the gun, Lily. Everyone will know by tomorrow that you tried to kill me,” Natalia taunted fearlessly, even though the gun was aimed in her direction.
With the wall pressing against my back, I had nowhere to go. Flight or fight—that was the only option I had now. I couldn’t kill Natalia, but I had to protect myself at all costs. I didn’t want to end up dead, and escaping was my last option.
Reaching the wall where I stood, Natalia jumped at me.
Whack! I hit her on the head with the gun and kicked her hard in the knees. She dropped to the floor, screaming as she held her injured head with her hand. Her screams intensified as she realized blood was flowing down her face.
“I’ll fucking kill you for this!” she wailed while staring at her now bloody hands.
Without a moment’s delay, I seized the chance to escape and dashed to the door like a madwoman as I heard footsteps running after me.
Pushing the door open, the billowing wind slapped my face. My mouth dropped open in shock upon realizing I was standing on the deck of a yacht. There was no other escape except the vast ocean.
Natalia’s wild screams filled the air. Shivers went down my spine when her voice reached my ears. “I’m coming after you, Lily. You have nowhere to go, and there’s no place for you to hide. Prepare yourself to die.” Natalia’s hysterical laughter echoed through the night once more.
Panic seized me when I reached a dead end. Slowly, I turned toward Natalia and found her standing a few meters away from me, her menacingly bright eyes fixed on mine like a predator hunting her prey. I took a step backward and found my back against the rails.
“Don’t come near me! I’ll shoot you.” My voice thundered across the deck, but Natalia seemed not to care. She continued to move closer. Left with no choice, I aimed the gun at her and pulled the trigger.
Bang! Bang!
The sound of gunfire made her stop suddenly. She shot me a dangerous glare.
The sound of thunder shattered the silence, followed by the sharp lightning carving its way into the sky. The waves were still peaceful and calm, but soon the brewing storm would shatter the stillness and turn the calm ocean into savage waves.
Before I could prepare myself for the fast-approaching storm, the yacht tilted sideways, causing me to collapse onto my feet before I could reach for the rails. The gun dropped from my hand and skittered across the floor.
Natalia, seeing the gun on the floor, forced herself to get up from where she had fallen after the wave slapped the yacht and grabbed the gun at the same time I jumped for it.
A scream tore from my lips as she yanked my hair after I got hold of the gun first.
“Leeeet me gooo!” I screamed and jabbed my elbows into her face.
“Aaargh!” Natalia whimpered like a tortured animal as she touched her now broken nose. She ignored the pain and willed herself to get up, running after me.
The yacht swayed. I grabbed the rails with my available hand for support. Seizing the opportunity to recover the weapon, she crossed the distance between us and grabbed the gun from my hand.
We played tug-of-war with the gun. Neither of us wanted to lose and fought our hardest. Lightning lashed across the sky, followed by the deafening sound of thunder. The vicious waves slammed the yacht, throwing us both against the rails. Natalia wasted no time. She grabbed the gun from my hand and pushed me off the rails before I could recover.
I choked back a sob as I was thrown off the yacht, one hand dangling from the cold rails. My grip tightened on the cold metal to keep myself from dropping into the dark, treacherous water below.
“Goodbye, Lily.”
Natalia aimed the gun at my head and pulled the trigger, but missed as the yacht swayed. The bullet hit me straight in the chest.
My strength faded, and an intense pain slammed through me with force. I lost my hold on the rails, and the cold, raging waves captured my body.
This is the end for me, I thought painfully before darkness swallowed my consciousness.
