Broken windows

Y/n barely slept.

She tossed and turned through the night, her body restless even as exhaustion clung to her bones. Every time she shut her eyes, an uneasy feeling curled in her chest; somebody was out there studying her.

When her alarm on her phone finally blared, she felt like she had only been asleep for minutes.

Y/n sat up slowly, blinking blearily at the morning light filtering through the guest room's blinds. The tension that had been gripping her all night still hadn't faded. If anything, it had settled deeper, an uncomfortable weight pressing down on her shoulders.

She rubbed her face, trying to shake it off. "He's just scaring me, just trying to intimidate me."

Yet she couldn't force herself to believe it; her mind kept wandering back to Anthony's ID and the pile of dead birds. She hesitantly got up and pushed to get ready.

The house was silent, and for some reason, that made the feeling worse.

Y/n forced herself to eat, even though her stomach was tight. She grabbed her bag and headed out, catching the bus like always. But even as she sat by the window, watching the town blur past, the tension didn't ease. Something felt off.

When she got to school, she realized it wasn't just her.

The halls were quieter than usual. Students moved slower; their conversations hushed. There was no usual morning buzz, no laughter, no casual greetings being exchanged. Instead, there was an eerie stillness.

Y/n's fingers curled around the strap of her bag as she made her way through the halls. She swallowed hard, her pulse quickening. Something must've happened.

She reached her locker, fumbling with the combination, when a familiar voice broke through the quiet. "Good morning, sleepy."

Y/n turned to see Kou leaning against the lockers beside her, arms crossed, one eyebrow raised in amusement. His dark brown hair was tousled as usual, and his yellow eyes flicked over her, sharp but playful. Despite his usual smirk, she could tell he noticed something was off.

"You look like you saw a ghost," he said, nudging her shoulder lightly. "What's up?"

Y/n hesitated. She wanted to brush it off, to say nothing, but the words stuck in her throat. Instead, she sighed, shaking her head. "I don't know. Just one of those days."

Kou studied her for a second, his smirk faltering just slightly before he quickly masked it with his usual easygoing tone. "Seems like it's hitting everyone today. Well, good thing you have me around to keep you distracted."

Y/n managed a small smile. "Oh yeah? How exactly do you plan on doing that?"

Kou grinned. "Dunno. I was thinking some grand romantic gesture."

Y/n laughed. "Please don't."

"Too late, I'm already warming up," he teased, clearing his throat.

Y/n rolled her eyes, but the tension in her chest eased just a little. Kou just winked. "Now come on. Before you drag me down with your doom-and-gloom energy."

Y/n huffed, shutting her locker. "I didn't ask you to be here."

Kou playfully punched her shoulder as they started walking. "And yet, here I am. You're welcome."

"Yeah, remind me again why you escort me to class like some kind of royal bodyguard? Won't you be late?"

"Semantics." He waved a hand dismissively. "I'm just being a gentleman."

Y/n gave him a look. "Gentleman would imply you're actually chivalrous."

Kou gasped dramatically. "How dare you, I am incredibly chivalrous."
