Chapter 20:
During Summer Interhigh, Kaiya's team placed 5th overall in Japan. They had unfortunately lost to a talented volleyball team from Itachiyama. Even though her team was understandably upset, they were grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate in nationals.
Kaiya waved goodbye to her teammates as they boarded off the bus. They had arrived back in Miyagi and she was exhausted. She swore that she would sleep the whole weekend away just to recover. Unfortunately, the second she arrived at her house, she was astounded at the fact that Oikawa was waiting for her beside her front door.
"Jeez... I've been waiting for like ten hours..." Oikawa sighed exaggeratedly.
"What are you doing here?" Kaiya asked curiously.
"Sorry about the loss," He changed the subject, "I watched your last match on TV..."
"Yeah..." She nodded slowly as she approached him, "Well... It happens."
"I got you a mourning cinnamon roll." He chimed in as he held out a brown bag seemingly filled with pastry treats.
"Mourning...?" She raised an eyebrow skeptically, "No one died."
"Well, yeah, I know..." He huffed as he crossed his arms, "The cinnamon roll is just..."
Oikawa paused, pursing his lips together. He was unsure of how to say that the cinnamon roll was to make her feel better due to the fact that she lost her match and due to her somber reunion with her ex-boyfriend. That night he video-called her and her friend answered, he meant to end the call as he respected her privacy but for some reason, he couldn't bring himself to do so.
Call it curiosity. Or maybe even...
. . .
"Anyway, here..." He shoved the bag in front of her, causing Kaiya to blink in confusion, "There are some cookies in there too."
Kaiya calmly took the bag for him and thanked him. Although she was texting Oikawa during the bus ride back home, she didn't expect him to do anything like this. Kaiya's heart fluttered, and that familiar feeling was almost like what she experienced when Kuroo confessed his feelings to her. She shook the strange thoughts out of her mind.
Oikawa prepared to jog home when she sputtered out something startling.
"Want to come in?" She mumbled softly.
He widened his eyes - she willingly invited him in. Oikawa had so many things to do today like practice for volleyball, workout, and edit his university applications and he wanted to be productive...
"Sure." He answered nonchalantly.
Kaiya twisted the key in the doorknob and pushed the door open. He trailed behind her and cleared his throat, his body feeling tense all of a sudden.
Why was he feeling tense?
"Your dad's not here?" Oikawa asked.
"No..." She shook her head as she placed her bags down on the floor, "He's in America right now. He'll be back in a week."
"He didn't take time off to watch your matches?" He grimaced.
"He couldn't..." Kaiya murmured, turning all the lights on in the living room and the kitchen, "I don't mind. It's not a big deal."
"If you say so."
Kaiya watched as Oikawa plopped down on her couch and took his phone out. She was a little unsure about why she had invited him inside.
