Chapter 24:
Oikawa stood in front of his ex-girlfriend's house with a bouquet of white and purple carnation flowers, a box of caramel chocolates, and a brown, stuffed teddy bear. This was the moment where he was going to ask for her forgiveness and explain that he really does care about her. Thanks to Iwaizumi, he had a second chance and he absolutely cannot mess this up.
A few kids ran by him kicking a soccer ball and as Oikawa watched the ball dart around back and forth, he was strangely reminded of Kaiya and her detailed explanation of the collision theory.
"Collision theory states that when suitable particles of the reactant hit each other, only a certain amount of collisions result in a perceptible or notable change. These successful changes are called successful collisions."
"What? Are you even speaking normally?!"
"Okay... It's like... when two things that are destined for each other collide and the results of that is evidently clear."
"Right... Like... me and volleyball?"
"Yeah... Except, you know... I'm talking about particles... Not you and volleyball."
He smiled to himself - she was such a nerd. Oikawa took a step forward to his ex-girlfriend's front door when his phone buzzed unexpectedly.
Iwa-chan: Call me after you talk to Nakamura-san.
Oikawa was intrigued but decided at that moment that he should probably focus on winning his ex back. He straightened out his shirt and took a deep breath, trying to calm and steady his nerves. He felt nervous, mostly because he really did want her to forgive him for being such an awful boyfriend. He cared about what his ex-girlfriend thought of him, just like how he cared about Kaiya's opinions of him.
"For what it's worth, you really impressed me today with your part of the presentation. You're smarter than you think you are."
"Is that an actual compliment from the Miyazaki Kaiya? The one that constantly tells me to get hit by a bus?"
"Don't get used to it. I still hate you."
Oikawa froze in his tracks - now hold on a minute, how come he kept thinking about Kaiya at a time like this? This was not the time to be side-tracked. Wait... why was his mind even preoccupied with thoughts of her in the first place? He suddenly felt lightheaded, and as he leaned against the gate of his ex-girlfriend's house, memories that he and Kaiya shared flooded his mind.
"You lost today but that doesn't mean you're a loser. You're Oikawa Tooru, for god's sake."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"You're stubborn and relentless. You're... you. Just... Don't give up... You're kind of legendary."
Miyazaki Kaiya, whose smile and laugh caused his heart to frantically palpitate and seemingly burst out of his chest... Someone whose intellect, charm, and humor matched his... And someone whose talent he admired, and who inspired him in more ways than one...
"Don't leave me alone, okay?"
"I won't."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Oikawa remained motionless as he held his ex-girlfriend's gifts. His eyebrows furrowed in frustration and he couldn't help but notice how tense his body had become. Nakamura's front door was mere inches away and yet, his feet refused to move. His heart began to quicken, and he held his breath at his startling revelation.
